How to send large files to me. Many people are fighting with trying to send a large amount of files back and forth over the Internet. Some people using e-Sword, and now TheWord are using free file hosting services such as esnips.com, and rapidshare.com to host their modules. I highly recommend against using any of these services because (1) they are profit seeking services, and they function on the basis of people going to pages to download something, so they don't care if people actually download the file or not, just that they see their page with the download link, and thereafter the Google ads count for them, and the download link can work or it sometimes won't (best for them) "try back later". This is a lesson in frustration because you are too cheap to pay for a site yourself. So the entire experience is unreliable. The best way to download a file is simply to have a link to the file with a description of what is in the file. Click and download. No junk. (2) Google is very obviously avoiding most of these types of services as far as registering them for Google search. Even though the filename has a key word in it, you will be hard put to find that site/file via Google or Yahoo, etc. It just doesn't show up, or shows up on the 10,000th page which is just the same as not showing up. (3) These file sharing services are also what you see is what you get. In many they tell you upfront that so many people have to download your file or if not, they will remove the file after a time. So for free means temporary that will disappear quickly if a lot of people don't download it, and by the very nature of what they are doing, few people will see your files. (4) Other garbage they throw on us. esnips.com is a good service, but having said that (and having some of my files on esnips.com) I have stopped using it. Why? Because they are pushing for people to install the esnips toolbar in their browser in order to upload or download files. No. I don't want their nasty toolbar in my browser. I have enough junk slowing down my browser to start adding this junk. I also don't know what the toolbar does. Does it watch my browsing activity (a.k.a. is there some way they can see my bank password from their toolbar when I go to my bank site and login)? I don't trust these people, and you shouldn't either. My final "straw that broke the camels back" is that esnips is kinky in linking. You cannot just link to a person's page or to a specific file (they want to force you to go through multiple pages in order get the Google ads to add up). So I have been given a link to somebody's esnips page only to click on it, and it takes me to a login in page, then I login (I have an account) and still cannot get to the page I want. After trying I try to search esnips for their page. Again an exercise in futility and frustration. Try searching for "e-Sword" on esnips and you will get thousands of hits, most of which are for Japanese "swords". Their search utility stinks. So I don't want to use their services if they are going to mess with me. (Even with an esnips account and logged in, you cannot download more than 10 files at a time). ALTERNATIVES FOR TEMPORARY STORAGE So my recommendation is to not permanently store modules for e-Sword nor TheWord on these places. I have websites I purchase and maintain to make module libraries available to the world, and I will gladly host all modules except those that are premium modules. (Somebody is making money from selling modules, let them pay these costs. If you are stealing somebody's modules and pirating that module, I won't help you in that case either.) But sometimes people want to send me large files so there are some recommendations from this webpage http://www.masternewmedia.org/how_to_send_large_files_without_email/index.html On this URL above (there are like 11 pages of places where you can store files for transfer for free), I like some of these... http://www.send6.com/landing_index_v1.php This appears to be a simple 6 file max, service where you can upload 6 large files (think zipping them into mega files) and send an email from your email account to somebody else's email, and they will get an email (from you) with six links to where they can download these files. http://www.extralargemail.com/ This is another service like the above, but has 256MB storage space and only holds your file for 15 days. This is basically a 50 GB file storage service, and if I am not mistaken, they have a program function that will make this storage to appear like an additional hard drive on your computer. Just send a large file. Simple. 1GB of space with their free plan. --------------------------- In the end I only got through page 5 of the 11 pages, and there are a lot of things to try there. As an alternative, I have an FTP setup with my site where people can send me files. I don't post that because I have to host the space, and that is an issue sometimes. Also people perhaps can upload virus infected files there, and so I only give the password to specific people who ask it to send me files.
