Installation under WINE You can also read the forum note on running theWord under Linux: http://forum.theword.gr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8 Comment http://www.puritanboard.com/f66/theword-bible-software-51553/
Ok. So I am a PC user, and sorry, I don't have money for a MAC and nobody is offering to donate one to me. So I am guessing at what the right installation on a MAC or Linux would be. But I will make a page for recommendations, and if you guys with those machines will give me feedback at tech@davidcox.com.mx, on whether this works or doesn't work, I would appreciate it. Base pages used for reference
for these instructions: Downloading WINE
Download WINE:
http://www.winehq.org/ First thing, you cannot run theWord "out of the box" on a MAC or under Linux. You need a Windows Emulator, or translation program. The one I know a lot of people use is called WINE (another is called Darwine). Note the comments on this page Me too! So, I've created a package that combines a free, open-source project called Darwine (v0.9.57) and e-Sword (v9.0.2). I've also pre-installed a number of Bible translations, commentaries, dictionaries, and extras for e-Sword. This will allow Mac users to run e-Sword on their Intel-based Mac. Not sure if you have an Intel-based Mac? This might help: Apple started using Intel processors around January 10, 2006. Also, if you have Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) you need to make sure you have the X11 package installed. Check out this link. If you have Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) the X11 package comes installed by default so you probably don't have to worry about it. Also, please note that the Mac OS 10.5.7 update breaks the ability to copy and paste out of e-Sword. I don't currently know of a work-around other than simply not upgrading. This basically gives you the minimal operating system/hardware for using a WINE (Windows Emulator). Installing WINE Now you need to install DARWINE (or use your
WINE install if you already have a DOS emulator installed).
Installing theWord Go to this page on the theWord website and download the main package. http://www.theword.gr/index.php?article.download What you want is the "Main download Package" and then the Add-on modules under that. You also can download modules from my website (see sidebar at left). If you have problems downloading or running the exe installer for these modules, let me know and I will post the modules in zipped files without the installer. Consult my pages about the actual installation of the theWord program. Note that I recommend installing to a folder on your hard drive, but use the install2memorystick installation. It is completely self contained in that folder (like an old Windows 3.1 program), and writes nothing to the Windows Registry nor anywhere else on your machine. I have several copies of this in different folders on my Windows PC, and each can be running at the same time, and each only sees what is in its folders (and child folders). Basically there is nothing important going on in the installation except copying the module (*.twm) to a folder under the default theWord folder. In the USB Memory installation of the program, it is that folder you designate in that installation. It can be anywhere, and you can copy from one computer to another without any problem. (Of course you can also copy it to a USB drive and run it from somebody else's computer also, or burn it to a DVD to give to a friend.)
