Slide Show of Pyramids of Sun and Moon (12 photos)
by David R. Cox
About 45 miles north east of Mexico City is the valley of Teotihuacán, the valley of the Gods. In this valley is situated two pyramids, the Pyramid of the Sun, and the Pyramid of the Moon. Originally Teotihuacán was a religious site of the Aztecs and Nahuatls (the original "Mexicans"). These two pyramids were religious temples, and at the height of the Aztec empire, it is said on a special holy day, 10,000 slaves (Indians from other tribes) were offered as human sacrifice on the Pyramid of the Sun. Supposedly the white skinned god came to visit them somewhere around the time of the birth of Christ, and predicted he would return afterward. This prophecy coincided with the arrival of Cortez.
