From eruption of Popo on July 2003
by David Cox
Downtown Mexico City is only about 40 miles from an active volcano, Popocatepetl (or Popo for short). We are relatively safe from this volcano as far as lava because Popo is a very high mountain, as is the valley of Mexico, and the land between us is relatively low lying, so the lava would have to flow down Popo and back up to get to us.

Popo is located halfway between Mexico City (Mexico on this map) and Puebla to the lower right of Mexico City. There are two dots for the two peaks of Popo and Ixta.
(Right) This is a postcard of a previous eruption of Popo, with buildings dangerously close in the foreground.
