Christian Perfection: Conclusions.
Let's define Sanctification, holiness, piety, as simply Christlikeness,
being like our Savior. Note that in the most basic of terms, salvation is
going to heaven where God lives, and living with God for eternity. (I
understand that in the end times, God will remake the heavens and the earth,
and bring heaven to earth, but I think you understand my point.) Access to
live with God is commonness of spiritual and moral character. We must be
like God is if we are to live in God's presence. This means we must be holy.
Simply put, sanctification is this present day process of being actually
made holy in our daily lives in fulfillment of God's judicial proclamation
that we are saints (justification). Please read my
Key
Controversial Points in Sanctification by David Cox.
34.11.01 Definition of Sanctification
Note that "perfectionism," "entire sanctification" are terms
that usually indicate a Methodist-Holiness point of view. Probably the
singular most famous presentation of this is John Wesley's book, "A
Plain Account of Christian Perfection." See my "Key
Controversial Points in Sanctification" for explanations of these different positions.
Also note that woven in this issue of Sanctification is
another issue, and that is that if "Entire Sanctification" is possible
before death, this side of glory, is it a second work of Grace. See DCox -
Is
Sanctification a Second work of Grace? here for my discussion of this.

Urgent Call to Christian Perfection
Excellent study!
34.11.01 A.
Preliminary Thoughts about Sanctification
Our first thought is that according to verses like Mat 5:48 "be ye
therefore perfect" and 1 Peter 1:16 "be ye holy", God's view of perfection
and holiness (sanctification) is that it is something that God requires of
every Christian, therefore it is a possibility that we can be holy and
perfect. To separate this by defining holiness and perfection as sinless
perfection, where a person NEVER MORE SINS, is to redefine Scripture to mean
something that it does say, and to tangle us up in thoughts, reasoning,
logics, and systems that we will never get out of.
Secondly there is a very difficult aspect of all of this that hinges on a
present and future aspect of holiness. Once saved, we are then and there
"holy" in God's terminology for us. Yet we understand that we still have sin
in us (1 John 1:8-10), and that we will have sin in us until the day of our
graduation to heaven. We are these things because we desire to be these
things, and we strive with all our strength and heart to be what God wants
us to be, and this is even though we sometimes fail (but such a holy person
will never give up on the pursuit of holiness even though he fails often or
horribly).
Thirdly sanctification, holiness, and Christian maturity (Perfection) has
no secrets. There are no methods or secret mystical teachings that will get
us there. Our definition of holiness should center on the earnest desire and
strivings to be holy is what is holiness. This does not give acceptance to
"giving up" or surrendering to sin. That is wrong and flies in the face of
holiness. But the goal and strenuous efforts to reach that goal is what
makes a person sanctified or holiness or perfect. The only thing that can
really be considered a "secret" principle, or miraculous power to achieve
this goal is our faith. Here faith is confidence in God, that he desires and
will help us do what is God's will, and that God is actually working in me.
The misnomer of "Entire Sanctification" has an aspect of truth. When we
speak of entire sanctification, what do we mean? That we are completely
cleansed of all sin to be perfect like God or an angel in heaven? 1 John
1:8-10 faces us glaringly that we will not accomplish that here on earth.
But in another aspect, sanctification and the holy fight against sin is
"entire" in that we cannot hide pet sins in the closets of our heart.
Everything is fair game, and anything that is acknowledged as sin must
become a target to work on.

POINT OF CONFUSION: Loss of Salvation=
Unsuccessful Attempts at Holiness. Here I see people getting confused
over sinning and thinking that they "lose their salvation". In reality, holiness (not sinning) is
different from being saved to some degree. Salvation is based on faith in the Savior,
and the reason why we are saved is not
because we are "perfect" or obtain sinless perfection. The fact that the issue even has
to be discussed or defended is a testimony to some groups who deal
(incorrectly) with unrepentant sinners among their own. The issue is not
without its merits, because this is a crucial dynamic in every religious
group, members who live in a libertine way, the group wants to exclude them
from "the redeemed". Most good groups (seeking to obey God) will exercise
discipline against the individual who wantonly sins.

34.11.05 Christian Perfection (Spiritual
Maturity)
Matthew 5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even
as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
Technical Word Studies in Greek and Hebrew:

DCox - Christian
Perfection in the New Testament: Words and Verses.
DCox -
Christian Perfection: Conclusions.
Christian Perfection - To define
"Christian Perfection" is different to different people. The Holiness
movement in general will define it as a miraculous event, an outpouring
of the Holy Spirit on a person's life that is equal to salvation, thus
the term "second work of grace" is often used by them for this emotional
and spiritual event. To these "holiness" oriented Christians, holiness
absolutely must be an emotional and moving experience rather than humble
obedience. The Calvinist will see perfection (sinlessness before death)
as an absolute impossibility, and therefore all talk, consideration, and
above all, any hope of the same is futile and unbiblical. This opens a
door for a light treatment and spiritless pursuit of holiness in many
Calvinists.
Therefore I define Christian Perfection as a third option. Perfection
is maturity and being like God the Father, following the example of
Jesus Christ. This spiritual maturity (which is a more preferable
translation of the term) is a matter of character. To be specific, our
partaking of the character and attributes of God.
Ephesians 4:13
"Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of
the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of
the fulness of Christ:"
Jesus is the active and visible example in our lives, which we should
follow and pattern ourselves after him. Being a mature and adult
Christian takes on many aspects of character modification (improvement).

Maturity").

Web Pages
In general I hesitate to link to other pages
on the Internet anymore. Quite frankly, whole websites disappear from time
to time (which usually has really good stuff on it, stuff that is hard to
find). More often specific pages get lost, get moved, or are deleted by
their owners. So I would suggest that in general, Google the topic name,
(especially use the following search)
Google Search Phrase: "keyword"
intitle:"keyword" -amazon -ebay -ISBN -price -Bookstore
The reason I suggest this is that it will
exclude sites that are not offering things online (except for pay) and the
intitle Google term will help narrow the search.

Biography of Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)
Bonar was a Scottish churchman (Free Church of Scotland) and poet.
The son of James Bonar, Solicitor of Exise for Scotland, he was born and educated in
Edinburgh. He entered the Ministry of the Church of Scotland, and settled at Kelso. He
joined the Free Church at the time of the Disruption of 1843, and in 1867 was moved to was
Edinburgh. In 1853 he was earned the Doctor of Divinity degree at Aberdeen. In 1883, he
elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was a voluminous
and highly popular author, and in addition to many books and tracts wrote a number of hymns,
many of which, e.g., "I heard the voice of Jesus say" and "Blessing and Honor and Glory and
Power," became known all over the English-speaking world. A selection of these was published
as Hymns of Faith and Hope (3 series). His last volume of poetry was My Old Letters.
His brother Andrew Bonar was also a well-known Christian writer and minister of the
Free Church of Scotland.[Wikipedia.org]
Biography of Samuel Logan Brengle (1860-1936 Methodist, Salvation Army)
Samuel Brengle was an American Methodist born in Indiana who joined the Salvation Army
in the 1890s. He was mightily used of the Lord--even more so through his many books,
which were chiefly written during a convalescence following being badly injured while
street preaching. He was described by one observer as a kindly, literate and articulate
man who left good memories with nearly everyone he met.
Biograhy of Thomas Brooks (1608-1680 Congregationalist)
(1608-1680). "Nonconformist preacher. Born into a Puritan family, he was sent to
Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He soon became an advocate of the Congregational way
and served as a chaplain in the Civil War. In 1648 he accepted the rectory of
St. Margaret's, New Fish Street, London, but only after making his Congregational
principles clear to the vestry. On several occasions he preached before Parliament.
He was ejected in 1660 and remained in London as a Nonconformist preacher. Government
spies reported that he preached at Tower Wharf and in Moorfields. During the Great
Plague and Great Fire he worked in London, and in 1672 was granted a license to preach
in Lime Street. He wrote over a dozen books, most of which are devotional in character."

Biograhy of Walter Marshall (1628-1680 Puritan)
Walter Marshall (1628-1680) served as fellow at New College,
Oxford and Winchester College, and ministered at Fawley, Hursley,
and Gosport, England. His Gospel Mystery of Santification shows us
that sanctification is essential to spiritual life and inseparable
from union with Christ, that union with Christ means that
justification and sanctification are inseparable, that holiness
involves both the mind and soul of the believer, and that Christians
must aim for spiritual holiness and balance in all of life. A
biographical and theological introduction by Joel Beeke is included.
One of the best books on sanctification ever written.
