Introduction to Names - What is in a name? Names communicate character about the thing we name. We use names to give us a handle on something so that we can talk about it, but more important that an easy way to talk about a thing or person, it gives us a way of revealing the character of the thing or person. God uses names in the Bible in a very special way, such as in the naming of the 12 sons of Jacob. Each name communicated or revealed something about that person's character.

What is holiness? Holiness is a concept that essentially dwells in the greatness of God. Because God, like some great human king somewhere, is above and more royal, special, or different that all the rest, God demands that the things around him be of a special nature. This nature is essentially to be separated or distinct from the common humanity (profane) of the world.

Holiness can be described in this fashion. If you buy a set of fine china that costs several thousands of dollars, you will want to put it in a special place (china cabinet) where the children won't touch it even. Beyond that you will only use it on special occasion, because the daily china is cheap. If it breaks, then no real tears are shed. But fine china is many times hard to replace. The separation that we want from our normal daily plates from this fine china is a good distinction that is like separation or holiness. Likewise nobody wants to eat off the plate the dog has just eaten off of because it is "dirty" or "profane".
