Originally when I made this website

When I first created this website, I put up links both to the e-Sword.net program, and to all the pages on www.e-Sword.net (Rick Meyer's website), so that his pages would be boosted in Google rankings. I also directly linked to his files so that people could easily and without problems download the files they were looking for.

A change in Rick's policy

I believe that it was in February or March of 2009, that I checked my links on my website for dead links, and everything from www.e-sword.net showed up as a dead link. I went to the website and the pages and files were there but none of my links would bring up neither the web page nor the files (downloads).

I wrote Rick Meyers about this, and he told me that he changed a setting in his server to block all hot linking because it was like piracy.

My understanding from him was explicitly that people like me that link to his website are unwanted, and this behaviour is displeasing to him, so he reset something in his server to make it impossible. It is possible to copy the actual URL, and paste it in your browser, and it will work that way.

But the principle was very clear to me that Rick doesn't want any e-Sword related sites out there except his own. If he frustrates his users, then his program is (however good it may be) is dead in the water (at least as far as I am concerned).

My response

Therefore I obliged Mr. Meyers by removing all links to his website that I could find on my own e-Sword website, and I began to search for a substitute program which was at least as good as e-Sword. I found www.theword.net, THEWORD. What I found is that the dozens and dozens of issues I have written Rick Meyers to change or implement in e-Sword over the past 3-4 years I have been using e-Sword (and which Rick never implemented anything even though we passed from version 3 to version 9, except to make a Spanish language interface for e-Sword which I translated for him), all of these features were in THEWORD and working fine. I contacted Costas Stergiou and found him a most agreeable and easily to work with person. In the 3-4 months I have been working with THEWORD and Costas, he has updated THEWORD to include some minor feature or ability in the THEWORD at least 9 times so far.

The difference in attitude is profound, and I regret to have invested my time and energy in e-Sword to only be frustrated and stonewalled by Rick Meyers. I have a help site for e-Sword and I answer sometimes 2 dozen e-Sword related questions per week from people, as many in Spanish as in English. The issues and needed features (like searching Topics modules) were things that both I and the many people who wrote me commented about. Rick apparently feels such people like us are inconsequential.

Version 9 Headaches

When I found out about version 9, and Rick's plans, I wrote him asking him to please leave up links to version 8, which he told me he didn't want anybody to get ahold of version 8, everybody should upgrade. I also complained to Rick about the problems his implementation of version 9 format change would cause users in the Spanish speaking world, and Rick simply wasn't interested. When I complained about the problems this would cause people with tons and tons of modules to convert, he wrote me that people with tons and tons of modules are perhaps 1% of his user base, and that he doesn't program for that 1%.

I consider that people that would have hundreds of modules for e-Sword to perhaps be 40-60% from my observations, but who can prove either position. But I make the point that these people who have so many modules, use e-Sword more heavily than a causal user. In any way, it is disrespectful and suicide for a programmer to take that attitude towards his users. The problems version 9 has caused the e-Sword users has affected probably 80%-90% of the e-Sword users. Maybe I am wrong and there are 50% of the people out there that have e-Sword installed on their computers and never open the program except maybe once every 6 months, but those who use it for the ministry are definitely suffering needless hardship and suffering because Rick wants to prove some point only he knows what that point is.

I continue to get almost daily emails from people asking me to help them with their version 9 problems. This tells me that it is a major issue with the program now, and it also is a reason many people are abandoning e-Sword. I recommend people go to THEWORD.

My position in all of this

As for my position in all of this, Rick owns the e-Sword program and very well may do whatever he so chooses to do with it. I have no control over that. But I pay for my website hosting each year, and I invest many hours in studying how to use the program and making modules myself (probably 800 e-Sword modules so far), besides my financial investment in hosting services for this program. That being the case, I have made the decision that I will not invest "good money after bad". I will switch over to THEWORD. The best format for books in e-Sword was the dead STEP format, which in itself is very good (although spread out over many files in many folders), and nobody can format and distribute any STEP file without the Christian book publisher's permission. There is a legal protection against using that format, and to make a simple STEP file, you need to pay up $10,000 (this doesn't get you the software to make a STEP file, it is just a legal fee to be legally recognized as a STEP file producer).

Whereas Rick has been around for years working with this, he has done nothing to open the ability for people to have/use books in this format and structure. E-Sword has also been lacking graphics in the files, as well as real links from within the files and between the files. e-Sword essentially only provides links to a Bible. THEWORD has every a STEP file has without the legal restrictions on making and distributing them (THEWORD allows users to make Commentaries, Dictionaries, and Book files all from within the program).

So my question is why bother with e-Sword from now on? I see no reason to do so, and I see every reason to change over to THEWORD!
